“Exploitation of Solid and Liquid Waste for the Improvement of the Life Conditions of Swine Producers in the Swine Park of Ventanilla – Callao – Peru”

Description:

This project will allow the improvement of current life conditions of swine producers through the exploitation of solid and liquid waste generated in their house-farms. The exploitation system for swine excrement includes the construction of a biodigestor which produces biogas that is used as ecological fuel for cooking and/or warming piglets; gray-water produced while doing house chores is treated and used to irrigate the families’ bio-gardens by creating artificial wetlands. The process described above is accompanied by an awareness program for swine producers, strengthening of skills and the application of breeding techniques that improve production.

Goals:

• Encourage the development of competitive skills among families for the exploitation of waste generated in their house-farms.
• Improve production processes for strengthening skills.
• Implement an exploitation system for solid and liquid waste generated in house-farms.
• Promote the formation of business leaders with environmental responsibility in the region.
• Start a pilot project for replanting trees in the zone.

Lessons Learned:

• Start coordination with grassroots associations, Asociaciones del Vaso de Leche, Comedores Populares and other associations in the zone.
• Offer internships as part of the awareness and learning process showing the results obtained in successful projects that conduct eco-friendly activities.
• Monitor and provide feedback continuously in order to ensure an appropriate management of the components and activities of the project.

Results:

Beneficiary house-farms have not only seen economic and environmental benefits but also cultural benefits such as the application of clean technologies and social benefits like improvement of the self-esteem of breeders and their inclusion on a technical breeding system.

• Breeders participate actively in training about the use of biodigestors, artificial wetlands, bio-gardens and swine.
• Implementation of fourteen (14) exploitation systems for solid and liquid waste generated in house-farms in the Swine Park of Ventanilla.
• Improvement of swine comfort and production parameters which has increased breeders’ income.
• Planting of seventy (70) trees as the beginning of a replanting program with the participation of the District Municipality of Ventanilla, the Ministry of Agriculture - AGRORURAL, and the population of that zone. This activity was welcomed beyond expectations.
