San Francisco

Description:

The project “Healthy San Francisco” provides innovative solutions to the needs concerning solid waste management in San Francisco de Yarinacocha, the largest shipiba community in the Peruvian Amazon region with more than 1300 inhabitants. We see our work as the first step for the promotion of sustainable development in the region applying solutions based in the responsible management of natural resources.

Goals:

  • Increase the health quality and environmental education and awareness levels among the inhabitants of this community (including decision-makers) in order to modify habits and behaviors that will allow the minimization of waste, street cleaning and protection of the environment.
  • Develop a solid waste segregation at the sources program among the population that allows reutilization and reduction of the volume of waste to be disposed of in sanitation ditches.
  • Implement a differentiated selective collection system for reusable and non-reusable solid waste.
  • Produce compost (vegetal fertilizer) through the treatment of organic waste generated by each family of the community.
  • Dispose of solid waste in appropriate places (sanitation ditches).
  • Promote sustainable initiatives for the project such as farm projects (bio-gardens) and agro-forest projects (reforestation) using produced compost.

Lessons Learned:

  • Educational activities in schools shall be conducted at the long term, not short or medium term.
  • It is important that every delivery or donation made by the community is formal, using minutes and letters.
  • It is difficult to organize and execute collective or community works, even the ones that benefit the community, in large communities such as San Francisco.
  • Sanitation ditches are not an effective strategy for Amazon communities due to excessive rain. It is better to use a fill on surface.

Results:

After a year of work, our project is used by the whole community of San Francisco. 95% of families participate in our segregation at the sources and selective collection program. We have collected more than 40 tons of organic waste which have produced 10 metric tons of compost. We have also collected 2 tons of recyclable material and reduce the amount of waste to be disposed of into sanitation ditches in 87%.
