Project: "Creation of jobs and increase of income through micro-businesses and operators working in selective segregation of solid waste in the Province of Huaraz"

Goals:

  • Economic and social inclusion of informal solid waste segregators and intermediate traders in the Province of Huaraz.
  • Improvement of the quality of life of operators working the first stages of the solid waste recycling process.
  • Appropriate use of production and trade technologies, methods, practices and process.
  • Formalization of individuals or entities that participate in solid waste management.
  • Appropriate organization of segregators with the population, municipality, public and private sectors.

Lessons Learned:

  • Train personnel of the District Municipalities of Olleros, Tarica, Jangas and Independencia, Province of Huaraz, as well as the Provincial Government about “Challenges and Tools for Integral Solid Waste Management”.
  • Coordinate with District Municipalities of Olleros, Tarica, Jangas and Independencia for the dissemination of information about selective collection and house-to-house visits to raise awareness.
  • The need of a house-to-house visits to raise awareness.
  • Support the Municipal Environmental Commission (CAM).

Results:

Activities aimed to raise awareness in the population of the City of Huaraz have translated into more acceptance of the selective collection program and the Bono Huaracino; these are the main pillars of the integration of the population with organizations of formalized and active recyclers. A summary of achievements is listed below: 

  • Development of workshops about integral solid waste management and business management aimed at formal associations.
  • Preparation and diffusion of informative spots in 5 television and 12 radio programs.
  • Appearance in television and radio programs for the dissemination of information about activities and the consequences that our actions have in the community.
  • Press conference for the release of the Bono Huaracino, a process that informed the population about the activities of recyclers in the streets and presented them to the community as a formal beginning of their route and micro-routes.
  • Campaigns and 2500 house-to-house visits to raise awareness in the population through information about the work conducted by organized recyclers and on-site explanations about how to segregate at source, in this case, in their own homes.
  • Awareness talks to groups of several local stakeholders.
  • Creation of a final internship workshop for the virtual course aimed at local government officials.
  • Characterization study for the preparation of a diagnosis about solid waste management in the District Municipality of Independencia.
  • Coordination and validation of regulation proposals and technical-administrative procedures with local governments.
  • Monthly meetings for the assessment of project progress with officials and members of the Council of the Provincial Government of Huaraz and representatives of the District Municipalities of Independencia, Jangas and Tarica.
