Project: “Selective collection of reusable solid waste by formalized recyclers in the District of Comas”

Description:

The project has been executed since September 2008 through the strengthening of the Asociación de Recicladores “Fuerza Emprendedora de Lima Norte” and the inclusion of new recyclers into this association that is in charge of selective collection of reusable solid waste in houses and educational institutions as well as the transportation of waste to the gathering center for its segregation, weighing, storage and trade.

Recyclers participating in this association have a job which allows them to increase their income and interact with the population thereby gaining confidence and respect from the community.

Goals:

  • Achieve the formalization and social inclusion of informal recyclers into the selective collection program of reusable solid waste in the District of Comas.
  • Contribute to the improvement of living conditions of informal recyclers thanks to a stable, formal and safe job.
  • Improve the collection system of solid waste in the District of Comas.

Lessons Learned:

  • It is important to constantly monitor the collection of reusable waste in order to observe the interaction between recyclers and neighbors.
  • An awareness passacaglia is effective given that it encourages population to participate in the segregation of solid waste at their homes.

Results:

  • Four new recyclers have joined the Asociación de Recicladores “Fuerza Emprendedora de Lima Norte” to conduct selective collection of reusable waste.
  • Implementation of appropriate solid waste management in three educational institutions.
  • Training of teachers, students and parents about environmental issues in educational institutions.
