Cerro El Pino

Project: “Implementation of an alternative system for integral management of home solid waste in the Squatter Settlement Cerro El Pino, in Lima, Peru”

Goals:

  • Strengthen the Environmental Management Committee of Cerro El Pino.
  • Make population aware of appropriate waste management emphasizing the reuse of inorganic waste.
  • Work with 2 educational institutions of the zone training teachers and students.
  • Consolidate community micro-businesses for the collection of waste in Cerro El Pino.

Results:

Cerro El Pino is tidier and cleaner, which reflects in a better quality of life of the population and the decrease of diseases caused by solid waste, especially among children. A summary of achievements is listed below:

  • Creation of the Environmental Management Committee of Cerro El Pino, formed by representatives of social organizations such as the Programa del Vaso de Leche del Cerro El Pino, Coordinadora local de administración de salud del Cerro El Pino, Centro de salud del Cerro El Pino, Capilla El Buen Pastor (Catholic Church), Dámaso Laberguere School, an Association of Professionals and Technicians living in Cerro El Pino, Public Service Office of the District Municipality of La Victoria.
  • Signing of an inter-institutional cooperation agreement between the District Municipality of La Victoria, the social organizations mentioned above and Ciudad Saludable for the implementation of the project.
  • Organization, training and equipping of the Association of Recyclers and the Environmental Management Committee so that they can provide selective collection service (they have 6 recyclers with uniforms and safety implements, three moto-furgons, an office for customer service, and a gathering center for reusable waste).
  • House-to-house visits for the diffusion of the service and the education of families about appropriate waste management.
  • The house-to-house collection of the fee for cleaning services is in charge of the Environmental Management Committee of Cerro El Pino.
  • 2 cleaning campaigns were conducted in the entire squatter settlement.
  • A training program was developed for teachers and a handicraft workshop for students from Dámaso Laberguere School.
  • 60% of waste generated in Cerro El Pino is now collected.
  • 25% of the population now pays for the cleaning service (they had never paid before).

Lessons Learned:

  • Training of members of the Environmental Management Committee of Cerro El Pino about public and private administration of solid waste management.
  • Coordination with the District Municipality of La Victoria for the execution of the public cleaning project in Cerro El Pino.
  • Creation of an Environmental Awareness Team that emphasizes appropriate solid waste management.
  • The need of a house-to-house awareness campaign.
  • Identification of the mentality of inhabitants in Cerro El Pino in order to be able to reach them more easily.
