Integral Solid Waste Management (BPZ)

Description:

Within the framework of the agreement signed by the District Municipality of La Cruz, BPZ Exploración & Producción S.R.L. and Ciudad Saludable, the District of La Cruz is developing the project called “Integral Solid Waste Management”. The Regional Direction of Education, the Health Center, the Environmental Management Committee and the population in general are also involved in promoting and ensuring the success of the project.

Goals:

Main goal: Improve solid waste management in the District of La Cruz.

  • Inform and raise awareness among authorities, municipal officials, leaders of civil society organizations, private sector employees, students and population in general.
  • Design and implement a solid waste segregation at the sources and selective collection program that includes social inclusion of informal recyclers.
  • Design and implement an organic waste exploitation project in order to produce compost.
  • Fit sanitation ditches for temporary final disposal of solid waste and initiate the design and implementation of a landfill.
  • Train environmentally responsible citizens in the District of La Cruz so that they: (i) contribute to the elimination of health risk factors among the most vulnerable population, (ii) live in favorable conditions for welcoming tourists, and (iii) provide services that create jobs opportunities for the economic development of the population.

Results:

  • Selective collection of usable waste is conducted by recyclers who are in the process of creating the Association “Distrito Limpio y Saludable – La Cruz” (DILIMSA).
  • Agreements have been signed by the District Municipality of La Cruz, Regional Direction of Education - Tumbes, BPZ Exploración & Producción S.R.L and Ciudad Saludable aimed at involving teachers, students and the community in general.
  • Teachers, school environmental committees, school brigades, eco-clubs, grassroots committees and recyclers have been trained in environmental issues.
  • The Environmental Management Committee of La Cruz (Comité de Gestión Ambiental de La Cruz) has been created.
  • Evening awareness activities and house-to-house visits have been conducted.
  • A field for the landfill has been chosen and approved by the health sector and other institutions.

Lessons Learned:

  • The participation of stakeholders is important and essential for the execution of the project.
  • A population that is aware of the goals of the project can actively contribute and participate in the implementation of a domicile system for integral solid waste management in the district.
  • It is important to identify the particular mind of the population so that they become more easily interested in the project.
  • Be aimed at the implementation of strategies and actions meant to overcome the obstacles that are inherent to municipal administration.
