Project Avina – Ensemble Extension

Project: "Creation and development of social inclusion and labor insertion of informal recyclers".

Description:

This is a summary of the achievements, activities to conduct (both pending and proposed), and the budget for remaining part of the project.

Goals:

  • Contribute to the formalization of 110 solid waste recyclers.
  • Develop management skills in 110 recyclers.
  • Facilitate the access to credit for recyclers in order to improve their working conditions and operational capacity.
  • Improve the trade of solid waste through the implementation of collection centers.

Lessons Learned:

The District Municipality of San Juan de Miraflores, by means of its City Service Office, has formalized and authorized recyclers to walk around the streets of the District of San Juan de Miraflores in order to collect recyclable solid waste. Recyclers that are part of RECICONSUR provide this collection service to 31,870 houses and about 160,000 inhabitants of the district, who segregate waste at their homes; 44 small, medium and large businesses also participate in this program. 31 tons of waste are collected and traded monthly which has allowed 84 recyclers to have a monthly income of S/. 550.00 (about USD $ 180), prior to the economic crisis. Another important element has been the development of the recyclers’ self-esteem.

Strategy:

Considering the effects that the economic crisis has had on the recycling business such as decrease in the price of materials and therefore reduction of recyclers’ income, availability of resources and terms, we propose the consolidation of the following strategies that should have a positive effect on recyclers in San Juan de Miraflores:

  • Implementation of a gathering center with resources from financial co-backers of the project (Ensemble Foundation) who provided S/. 50,000.00 (about USD $17,000), which will allow the project to have basic fixed assets and a working capital for the operation of the gathering center. This gathering center will facilitate the organization of joint sales of recyclers, especially the products least affected by the current crisis such as paper and cardboard. Consultation on different issues of business management will be required.
  • Increase the number of businesses that participate in the selective collection program; recyclers obtain better income when collecting waste from businesses. The extension of this market will create new opportunities and businesses such as Tetra Pack and L’Oréal Peru have expressed their interest in joining the selective collection program called “Recycling together”.
  • As part of the working strategy of the project, a credit program was designed and implemented with the cooperation of Scotiabank. So far, the performance of this program has been satisfactory and is related to the follow-up work conducted by Ciudad Saludable.
  • The assessment of the project and presentation of results are part of the approved activities pending for the following months.
