Project: “Support municipalities to copy successful experiences concerning integral and sustainable solid waste systems”, Ancash Region

Description:

During its first year, the project proposes the improvement of integral solid waste management in 6 cities of the Ancash Region: Huarmey, Chasquitambo, Raquia, Cajacay, San Marcos and Chavin de Huantar. The project is focused on stimulating the application of practices for the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste among the population and educational institutions; the promotion of technical-operational systems that guarantee an integral solid waste management; the strengthening of the managerial capacity in the municipalities involved as well as the promotion of citizen participation in local environmental management issues.

Goals:

  • Healthy practices for solid waste management in educational institutions and population.
  • Municipalities shall manage their solid waste with efficacy, efficiency and sustainability.
  • Local participation in environmental management.

Lessons Learned:

  • 20% of the population applying practices for the reduction, reuse and recycling of solid waste.
  • 70% of coverage in collection and sweeping service;
  • 10% of collected solid waste is reused;
  • 50% of local institutions participate in local environmental management.

Results:

The project has achieved the following results:

  • Application of healthy practices for solid waste management in educational institutions and population involved.
  • Municipalities manage their solid waste with efficacy, efficiency and sustainability.
  • Local participation in environmental management.
